Don’t just buy any refurbished laptop
Don’t buy a refurbished laptop
That might sound odd, especially coming from us. But the truth is: the term refurbished is thrown around far too loosely in the Netherlands. Too often it means nothing more in practice than “a second-hand laptop that’s been cleaned up a bit”. Without real checks, without warranty, and often without the laptop even being suitable for Windows 11. That’s not safe, and you don’t get what you think you’re buying.
That’s why our first piece of advice is simple: don’t just buy any refurbished laptop. In this blog we explain why, what truly makes a laptop “refurbished”, and how to recognise a reliable choice.
What does refurbished actually mean?
Refurbished literally means: re-equipped. A laptop sold as refurbished should be:
- Opened up and technically checked
- Thoroughly cleaned (inside and out)
- Fitted with new parts where needed, such as an SSD or battery
- Sold with a warranty and clear specifications
In other words: refurbished is something quite different from “second-hand”. But in practice there are many cowboys who ignore that difference. They sell laptops that may be cheap, but not reliable or safe.
Read more here about our own take on the term refurbished and our standards.
When is a laptop no longer safe?
Since the arrival of Windows 11, the requirements for laptops have been tightened considerably. Microsoft doesn’t do that for nothing: older laptops lack important security features. So if you buy a laptop that doesn’t meet them, that’s a risk to your data.
A safe Windows 11 laptop must have at least:
- An Intel 8th-generation processor or newer, or AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer
- TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) for encryption and Windows Hello
- UEFI and Secure Boot set up correctly
A laptop that scores lower – an Intel i5-7200U, for example – is officially not Windows 11-proof. You might be able to install Windows 11 with tricks, but Microsoft warns: those systems may not get security updates. And a laptop without Windows updates is simply unsafe.
How do you spot a cowboy?
There are warning signs to watch for straight away:
- Laptops with processors that are too old, but still sold “with Windows 11”
- No warranty, or only 3 months
- No transparent specifications (e.g. the SSD type or memory speed is missing)
- Laptops still full of old data or dust
Those kinds of laptops aren’t refurbished laptops, but simply resold second-hand devices. And they come with risks.
What do we do differently at TopLaptop?
At TopLaptop we only sell laptops that:
- Are 100% Windows 11-proof (TPM 2.0, supported processor, Secure Boot)
- Always come with a clean, legal Windows installation
- Are thoroughly tested and cleaned
- Come with 12 to 36 months of warranty as standard
- Have modern specifications, such as more than 8 GB of memory and a fast NVMe SSD
That means you’ll never buy a laptop from us that’s technically already “on its last legs”. You get a machine you’ll enjoy for years, with no hidden defects or security risks.
So, don’t just buy any refurbished laptop
Refurbished can be a great choice – if it’s done properly. Unfortunately, many sellers don’t take it seriously. So our advice: don’t just buy any refurbished laptop: buy a TopLaptop. Then you can be sure you’ve got a safe, reliable and sustainable device in your hands.
